Don’t wait till you know Finnish before you start your own business.

I always knew at a point in my life I would become an entrepreneur but not this early. I started studiopeee out of necessity since I had no other options left. I had applied to so many jobs and all replies came back negative as I couldn’t speak Finnish – yet I did some menial jobs to survive.

I started to question if something was wrong with the educational background I had built or maybe myself. I had already done photography sometimes as a light entrepreneur and I decided to give it a go, as I realized I just had to start doing something by myself. So, I started studiopee in my living room. Now I have a studio in Lauttasaari and although things are not perfect, they are steadily getting better.

As an immigrant black woman I want to break the myth around the Finnish language: Don’t wait till you know it before you start your own business. It’s best to learn the language simultaneously while doing your own thing. Just use English – Finnish people handle it well.

I’m from Ghana and I’ve also previously lived in the Czech Republic. What I appreciate in Finland is the support, resources, and guidance that entrepreneurs have available by just calling and booking appointments. Thanks to these resources, you don’t need to start from zero. I think Finnish bureaucracy is manageable compared to other countries I’ve been to. But oh boy, it would have been nice to understand more about the Finnish taxation system before starting…

My dream has always been to travel the world but now the world is coming to me.

I meet a lot of tourists at my work and I love it. My dream has always been to travel the world but now the world is coming to me. I also have total control over my time which I think is the best thing in entrepreneurship. Another dream of mine is to have a media platform that can showcase other talents. I’m determined to be patient, working my way up and learning all the necessary skills meanwhile.

If you’re interested in entrepreneurship, just do it! It’s the only way to know if it works.
